“Perfection”

Gentle student of mine who I used to adore,
I admired your gifts, we established rapport
But all of that changed on that fateful day when
You committed unspeakable sin

My faith became flustered, my heart became numb
When I asked you to square a binomial sum
You brashly pressed forth with absence of care
And declared it equal to the sum of each square
Your license to Math, immediately suspended
My respect for you, fully rescinded

I mustered some grace in that circumstance
Magnanimously granting a pivotal chance
To right the wrong of your woeful transgression
By simplifying a rational expression
But a dispiriting chill ran down my spine
When identical terms on each side of the line
Locked in the crosshairs of your sniper scope
When you canceled them out – I canceled all hope
Silly student of whom I once was so proud
Mistakes in this class are just not allowed

 Despite such Mathy monstrosity
Again I summoned generosity
Longing to trust in your better discretion
As we proceeded with the algebra lesson
An opportunity to display your command
Of the factored polynomial you were charged to expand
But alas, you fell short, and I could never forgive
When you failed to distribute the negative
Gentle student, these crimes as cited above
Are the reason that you will never find love

 Your sky has crashed down
Your tower has tilted
Your green grass turned brown
Your promise has wilted
Your scoreboard is blank
Your rope has been cut
Your stocks have all tanked
Your doors have slammed shut
Your balloon is deflated
Your match has no spark
Your novel’s outdated
Your future is dark

Your dreams washed down a meandering river
Clearly you are not up to the task
A flawless performance you failed to deliver
I demand your perfection – Is that so much to ask?
